Gaila loves her Bear E. Bear, and when her little sister drops him in the gutter, Gaila watches over him through all the cycles of the washer and dryer until he's safe and warm in her bed. Meanwhile she remembers the things she and Bear E. Bear have done together and the times he has been lost and needed comfort. Russo's bright, simple gouache illustrations show an interracial extended family in a suburban neighborhood. Mama is white, Daddy is black, and grandparents, cousins, and friends are part of Gaila's daily life. Not much story here, but many kids will relate to the child who cares for her bear while her parents care for her. Straight wrote the acclaimed adult novel I Been in Sorrow's Kitchen and Licked Out All the Pots (1992).
