(1.) Nike ACG Orizaba Trail-Running Shoes and 'Run Speed One' X-Socks. These stable, lightweight shoes can be worn as comfortably in the jungle as in the mountains. *

(2). Buff Headwear, These versatile seamless garments are made from fast-drying microfibre cloth. Great as bandanas, dust screens, neck-warmers, hair bands and even emergency bandages. *

(3.) Lightweight eVENT Jacket. Lighter than, but as durable as, any other waterproof fabric, the real difference lies in its breathability; I can even wear it when I go running. *

(4.) Primaloft/pertex combination jacket and powerstretch tights. Rab's Photon hoody jacket and Kimmlite's run ride pants are two pretty essential items of clothing in my wardrobe. *,

(5.) Outdoor Designs Winter flex Inferno Gloves. These Coves are breathable and dexterous enough to use for cross-country skiing, but also warm and windproof enough to use for downhill skiing or biking in temperatures down to-30[degrees]C. *

(6.) Petzl Myo XP head torch with lithium Energizer batteries. Lasts an incredible 170 hours and has a range of 65 metres. *

(7.) Nalgene CXC reservoirs. These water bladders have great bite valves, made from a material that never seems to go mouldy, and 'quick connect' tubes that make them easy to refill. *

(8.) Leki Ultralite walking poles. In a 1,000-kilometre race, the ten per cent reduction in stress they give to legs and feet is a godsend. *

(9.) Suunto X6HR. As well as measuring basic performance, these mini computers offer useful tools such as an altimeter and a digital compass. *

(10.) Garmin GPSMAP 60CS handhold navigator. A colour display plans your route and presents it simply and logically *

(11.) Some essential girlie stuff. The essential oils in Biobas foot cream keep everything soft, supple and infection free; Elizabeth Arden eight hour cream is a pleasant (if expensive) alternative to iodine tincture for minor scrapes and burns; and a few drops of Japonica Hair Remoisturiser (Boots Natural Collection) make my hair feel and smell great, even if l haven't showered in weeks!
